PROFILE

The small Oaxaca town of Ocotlān would probably have remained unknown if Rodolfo Morales had not depicted it time and again in his paintings. He was born there on May 8, 1925 , leaving 23 yeard later to study art at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City. He taught drawing to high school students from 1953 to 1985 , at the Preparatoria Number 5, where ha painted a mural in 1962.
An inveterate traveler, he has toured Europe, Latin America and the United States. In 1965 while organizing a Christmas party at the home of a sculptress friend, Geles Cabrera, he used collages as decorations. She liked his works and suggested a trade: a piece of sculpture for a painting. This recognition stimulated Morales to focus all his efforts on painting.

At his show he was "discovered " by Rufino Tamayo. The rest is history: his works has been exhibited in Europe, the United States , and, of course, Mexico.Today , as a tribute to his native Oaxaca, proceeds from his work go to the Rodolfo Morales Cultural Foundation thet he has set up to foster the rich cultural heritage of his state and stimulate the academic devolopment of the young people of Ocotlān.
